DTMP provides support for youth who are experiencing a transition. Youth who transition from Elementary School to Middle School, Middle School to High School, or High School to College/Universities need support to make their transitions seamless. We also provide support for youth transitioning to/from new schools and/or neighborhoods.
DTMP provides support for youth who are experiencing behavior problems. Mentors will collaborate with youth therapist to determine what is causing the behavior and implement interventions that can prevent them. Mentors may collaborate with the youth’s teacher to develop a system to monitor behavior and explore positive/negative reinforcement options.
DTMP provides support for youth who could benefit from nutrition education. Some of the most common nutrition problems amongst youth include obesity, iron deficiency, diabetes, etc. It is important to encourage healthy food choices to enforce healthy eating habits at a young age. Mentors can assist with linking youth to nutritionists. Mentor’s can also link youth to sports teams/activities that promote physical health attributes.
DTMP provides support for youth who have experienced the absence of a parent. Both mothers and fathers play a pivotal role in a child's growth. When a parent is absent, the child may experience behavior, academic and emotional challenges. DTMP provides support and a safe space for these youth to share their feelings and experiences. We also collaborate with therapists and counselors to accomplish person-centered goals.
DTMP provides support for youth who want to explore employment opportunities. We assist with connecting youth to agencies to earn their Service-Learning hours and exploring their job interests while identifying their skills and abilities. They express their ideas pertaining to entrepreneurship and create goals to gain experience. We also assist with resume writing. Qualifying youth are linked to The Baltimore City Youthworks program. DTMP engages youth in activities that encourage them to showcase their talents. Our goal is to discover talents within our youth that otherwise may be overlooked. Every individual is unique and has something to contribute. We want our youth to see their talents as strengths. We link our youth to different programs and create our own platforms to express themselves. Youth are linked with peers who share similar interests.
DTMP provides youth with hygiene education to improve their overall health. We understand that knowledge of good hygiene helps to stop the spread of disease and protects the immune system from being overcome of harmful germs. We teach our youth how to properly use hygiene products and provide them when funding is available. Youth are not shamed or looked down upon for struggling with good hygiene practices.
DTMP provides support for youth who want to explore the effects of substance use. Substance use amongst youth has become a major social issue in our society. It is important to educate our youth on substance abuse. We encourage our youth to “KEEP SAYING NO”. We share important information on peer pressure, health risks associated with drugs and the effects that addiction has on individuals and their families. Our youth utilize coping skills to prevent engaging in substance abuse practices
DTMP provides support for youth who are interested in learning about violence in our communities. So many families are affected by violence in our communities and many of our youth are not provided an outlet to express their feelings. We provide a safe space to discuss our traumas and learn skills to cope with our anxieties. We discuss ways to prevent violence in our communities and encourage our youth to practice positive approaches to conflict resolution.
DTMP provides sex education support to youth with signed consent from their parent/guardian. We understand that these practices are sometimes difficult to discuss between parents and youth. We discuss topics including safe sex practices, birth control, and STD’s/STI’s. Our safe space allows for youth to express their ideas and concerns with practicing safe sex. We provide safe sex products to help prevent the spread of STD's/STI's and to prevent unplanned pregnancies.
DTMP collaborates with partners and hosts other fun events which include but are not limited to talent shows, game events, vision board parties, sip and paints and other celebratory events (Birthdays, Graduations, Perfect Attendance, Grade promotion, etc.)
